World Book Day 2018 - Library Competitions

World Book Day is a day set aside each year to celebrate reading, books, authors and illustrators. This year it takes place on Thursday 1st March.

At TRS, we'll be dropping everything and reading, there'll be staff dressing up, Library Lessons and COMPETITIONS, with lots of prizes to be won!

On Monday, 26th February, our brand new ‘Match the Character to the Author’ competition launches.

To enter, simply pick up an entry form from the Discovery Library and link the character with the author you think created them!

We are also looking for some brilliant book reviews to post on the Library Blog - ask one of your Librarians for a template.

Don’t forget our regular Word of the Week competition!

On Monday, Form Tutors will be giving out special World Book Day tokens to each pupil, with the exception of the Post 16 students who can collect one from the War Memorial Library on request. These vouchers can either be exchanged at participating book shops for one of the World Book Day books or they can be used to get £1 off any book costing £2.99 or more.

Alternatively, tokens can be put towards one of the five full-length books for teens priced at only £2.50 (that's ONLY £1.50 with the £1 book token).  You can use your voucher in any participating books shop from Monday 26th Feb - Sunday, 25th March 2018.

The short lists are announced on 15th March 2018 and shadowing begins on 16th March 2018!  At TRS, we are really looking forward to taking part in the Carnegie Shadowing Scheme again this year with our Year 8 students.

CILIP's Carnegie Medal is awarded each year for an outstanding book for children and young people as part of the Carnegie and Greenaway Children's Book Awards.  The Shadowing Scheme is an opportunity to 'shadow' the judging process for the Carnegie Medal.  This involves reading, discussing and reviewing the eight shortlisted titles.  The medal winners are announced on 18th June 2018.

Fall in Love with Reading

Books We Love - TRS staff picks!
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, now is a great time to fall in love with reading!

We have some amazing displays in the Discovery and War Memorial Libraries to tempt you with.  In the War Memorial Libraries, staff at TRS have kindly recommended books they love - these are on display for you to browse and borrow!

If you need some encouragement to love reading again here are a couple of tips:
  • Choose carefully – think about what you are interested in reading, there is no right or wrong!  It could be fiction or non-fiction, funny books, horror stories, romance or 'real-life' fiction.  Ask a friend to recommend a book they’ve enjoyed or ask your Librarian for ideas.
  • Make time to read every day - it may sound obvious but even if you don’t like reading, with the right book reading will become a habit and something to enjoy.  The Libraries have lots of great books from graphic novels and Diary of a Wimpy Kid to Alex Rider and Harry Potter.

Votes for Women - Centenary of the Representation of the People Act

It is 100 years on 6th February since the 1918 Representation of the People Act was passed.  This
gave women over thirty the right to vote for the first time in the UK.  Before this, women were not allowed to vote in general elections at all.

The Museum of London is running a series of exhibitions and events between 2 February and 27 March.  This weekend they are running a family-friendly event exploring the work of the suffragettes (members of the women’s suffrage movement, who fought to give women the right to vote) - why not check it out?

To find out more about the suffragette movement try Sally Nicholls’ brilliant novel Things A Bright Girl Can Do about three young Suffragettes from different backgrounds.  It is LoveReading4Kids.com book of the month and on our wish list!

Channel 4 are also showing the acclaimed film, Suffragette starring Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter this Saturday evening.

LGBT History Month - Celebrating Great British Authors

February is LBGT history month.  We have lots of great YA and classic novels by celebrated British LGBT authors including Juno Dawon, Patrick Ness, Cat Clarke and Oscar Wilde.  Come and borrow and browse!
